Nice day so did an after work hike of the red cloud side of Sharatin Cresting from the blue room onto the ridge We ran into a family group of goats. Two of the nannies had kids and both sets were twins. We got pretty close But it required some belly crawling Now is just the beginning of the glorious apline time in Kodiak. The waterfalls and streams up high on this hike are awesome. Lots of wildflowers out but they still have a couple weeks before they reach their zenith.

Wow. That is some stunning stuff. You are either going to get gored or produce some lovely chèvre. Not sure which.

This weekend I went up the north trail, camped above Shelly Lake, and then hiked along the cliff bands on the Elbow Creek side the next day before coming down the Red Cloud / Blue Room trail. I hiked down the Red Cloud River to Anton Larsen Bay and packrafted the shuttle back to the car. Paddling back is a really silly way to do the shuttle, but I was getting a little more practice in for my upcoming Shuyak trip. Here's a quick edit: Goats, Boats, and Bears

I headed up Sharatin today for one last visit before I leave Kodiak. Sharatin definitely delivered. I knew I was going to see some good stuff as I had lent out my good camera and just had a point and shoot with no zoom. The roses greet you as soon as you head up the Red Cloud trail A few less salmonberries up there after my hike Star Gentians are in full bloom replacing the wild iris Lots of wildflowers The snow is still melting providing some nice waterfalls I ran into some goats This older nanny decided to come investigate me. I didnt want her to get as close as one did last summer, so I came out from my hiding spot when she was about 25 feet away. She still stared me down for 20 sec before she decided to turn away. There is a nice lake up there from snow melt On the way down, I came within 40 yds of this younger bear. I always smile when I see these fearsome beasts with a mouth full of plants. Sharatin is just stunning this time of year

We had about 3 hours to burn so we headed up the North side of Sharatin to go see the B18 wreckage: kadiak.org/crash/b-18a_crash_summary.htmlThe last of the wild irises are clinging to life in the forest The landing gear of the B18. There is still a little bit of snow clinging to life which feeds this bowl all summer keeping it lush. This face was the general site of a slide this last winter. The slide from the winter Engine The bowl up there is quite beautiful. The bugs are minimal in the alpine these days.
