John S. and I found a strange item on Long Beach on 3/23 and took some pictures of it. We posted it on both "The Board" and "Kodiak Island Beachcombers" on Facebook and got great help with figuring out what this item is. Apparently it is an acoustic receiver for tagged Chinook and Sockeye Salmon in Cook Inlet. Apparently this had broken loose and drifted all the way to Kodiak. I spoke to the folks at Kintama and they sent me a ton of information about the project. The report on the study that this acoustic receiver was part of: www.legis.state.ak.us/basis/get_documents.asp?session=28&docid=14913And here is a really cool animation of what they found: kintama.com/animator/CookInlet2013/So the receiver still had data on it and they asked if it could be retrieved. I set out after work on Friday to go to Long Beach. The blue dot is where it was found. It was a glorious day heading through the forest. Loaded up on the beach Still some snow in some spots on the forest floor Good training for hunting season The black tube on the side is where the data is kept so if you run across one of those go ahead and contact Kintama as there is a small reward for returning the unit.

That was very perspicuous of the two of you to recognize that setup as more interesting than the typical mar-pol. The Department of Fish and Game here in Kodiak has also used (and lost) similar receivers (the black tube that looks like a small artillery shell on the side of the green barrel), so if folks find those along beaches in the archipelago, we'd love to get them back. Good find and retrieval!

John was definitely the one who recognized its importance.
