Tonight at 7 PM in the High School Commons is the Kodiak Island Borough's Trails Summit. The summit is an offshoot of the KIB Trails Plan. Basically the trails summit will be a bi-annual forum where the community can identify and resolve trails and land use issues. At the meeting the Borough Parks and Recreation Committee and Borough Staff will be introducing the Trails Plan and then seeking comments on road system trails issues. The second half of the meeting will focus on comments regarding Russian Ridge. This is the first area where the Parks and Recreation Committee will try and come up with a plan to resolve the many trails and land use issues associated with the area. The committee will present all the current issues, laws, zoning codes, and current plans pertaining to the area and will then seek input from the public. This is the first step in the process and after the meeting the Parks and Recreation Committee will continue meet (meetings open to the public) on the subject and will come up with a plan (or TMO - Trails Management Objective) to best resolve the issues in the area. This plan would then move on to Planning and Zoning and the Borough Assembly for approval. Anyway, if you care about Kodiak's trails it is a very important meeting. As I see it, it is where the wheels of the newly adopted Trails Plan meet the road. I hope to see you there. More details below. Patrick

Good meeting. Thanks for the heads up, Patrick.
I will delete this thread soon unless folks want to use this space for issue discussion.

Philip - this might be a good place to generate some discussion. I say leave it up for a day or two longer. Perhaps start a new thread? 'Gripes and ideas for Russian ridge' - Patrick

I'd like to see the City enforce the ban on ATVs on land within the city limits. I guess I should have said that last night to stir things up a little bit.

My gripe is the trash and glass. My idea, I'll clean it a little bit at a time, every time.

Thanks for the heads up. The meeting was reasonably well attended. The Borough Parks and Rec committee is still taking input and public comment on the Russian Ridge uses. If anyone out there gives a crap about what the future of Russian Ridge might be, you can still weigh in. What do you like? What bugs you about the status quo or the direction of use in the forest behind town? Let the Borough Parks and Rec committee know or someone else will get to decide the fate of your back yard. So few people are participating, and the committee is so hungry for public input that literally (not figuratively, but literally) a handful of folks could be pivotal in the direction this community takes.

If we want to weigh in, what is the best way to do that?

You can direct thoughts and screeds to the Borough Parks and Rec committee via Sheila Smith who is the KIB secretary: ssmith@kodiakak.us
In the subject line it may be helpful to mention what trail you are discussing and that you want this to end up addressed to the Parks and Rec committee.
