Hello,
If you are receiving this email, you have either taken a WFA course, WFR course, or have expressed an interest in taking a WFR course if it can be held on Kodiak Island. We are currently in the process of seeing whether or not there is enough interest in making the latter happen (i.e., holdigng a WFR on Kodiak this winter).
I am hoping you can either email me to let me know if you are interested in taking this course. Or, if you are not interested, I am hoping you can forward this email to someone who you think might be interested.
The Wilderness First Responder is a 80-90 hour course. Its focus is to provide information so that people who work, play, or travel in non-urban environments are better prepared to prevent and/or manage backcountry emergencies. The course covers human anatomy and physiolgy, assessment and management of critical system injuries (circulatory, respiratory, and nervous), assessment and management of musculoskeletal injuries and wounds, assessment and management of environmental injuries (such as hypothermia, frostbite, near-drownings, etc.), and assessment and management of medical emergencies (such as diabetic emergencies, anaphylaxis, etc.). Course content also includes evacuation decision making, especially as it applies to evacuations in Alaska.
The course includes lectures, skill sessions, short field sessions, and three mulit-casualty scenarios that are videotaped and debriefed.
The course is typically offered over a nine-day period which includes four long days (roughly 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) followed by one day off followed by four long days (again, 8 a.m. to around 7 p.m.). In order to receive the nationally recognized WFR certification (which is valid for three years), participants must pass a written final exam and must be able to perform basic skills throughout the week.
The costs of the course is around $625 per person. Until we can get an accurate estimation of the interest in the course as well as course dates, we will not be able to finalize course cost. This estimated cost covers all course books, lab fees, CPR certifications, and the WFR certification fees. This fee does not include food or accommodations.
The following are the four possible dates that we're looking at:
Option 1) December 3 through December 11
Option 2) December 10 through December 18
Option 3) January 7 through January 15
Option 4) Janaury 14 through January 22
If you believe you might register for this course, please email me with your preferred dates (a first and second option would be appreciated). If we can get a minimum of 12 participants to commit, we will move forward with confirming a site, firm up class meeting times, and confirm course cost.
Thank you very much for your assistance. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to let me know.
