I was dropped off at the beginning of the road to Saltery, Friday July 1 at 7 am; I hiked the road and part of the ATV trail connecting with Lake Miam and camped at Fern(?) Lake. (20 miles) Saturday I hiked to Miam, then took the ATV trail to Little Portage Bay and then to Pasagshak. I'd planned to camp somewhere in between, but since it was raining, I just hiked on home. (15+ miles) Total elev gain less than 2K for entire trip.
The ATV trails are easy to follow; one river crossing where the tracks faded on the rocks, I had to walk up and down the bar to find the trail on the other side. Trail conditions are what one would expect for an ATV trail: double track, often firm, many mudholes, bogs, etc (places where ATVs should never go).
Little or no bear sign until I started to Little Portage; finally saw 3 Big Hungrys at Little Portage who ran away as soon as they saw me, long before they would have scented me.

I'll post a map as soon as I figure out how to do it. Here's a link to the map.

A superb shorter trip, about 18 miles total, is to start at the Olds River bridge and walk the new, improved ATV trail to Summit Lake ( a great place to camp); then to Lake Miam (there's a great camp site near the beach); then on to Little Portage (good camping) and Pasagshak. This trip has been done in one day on bikes, and can be backpacked easily in 2-3 or even 4 days if you want to camp and then explore various areas.
