I just rode my mountain bike up Pillar. I took my regular bike with studded tires fearing that the road would be a major sheet of ice. The lower portion was probably ice recently but has been worked over by graders and equipment so that it is basically packed granular snow now. This gives way to real, actual packed snow near the top. There are a few spots where the wind funnels and blew all the snow away and there is ice there, but overall I was shocked at how nice the road was. I did not make it all the way up because it got a little too soft near the top. I will definitely ride my fatbike next time.

I didn't venture far out onto the crust very often, but everywhere I did the conditions seemed totally bomber with the same lovely 1" blanket of soft snow over the top, just like we saw at the chalet. Since I didn't to all the way to the top I couldn't see out the ridge to gauge coverage to the south towards swampy. In any case you would want to drive up until you get the first good view of the Sisters. That's where the snow really starts (though you could ski up the road itself before then). If I were in town and wanted to go crazy for an hour at lunch, I'd try it. If I had more time to kill, the pass is hard to beat right now as you well know.
