The Kodiak Audubon Society's 2010 Summer Hiking Program came to an end in the middle of the most beautiful hiking weather in mid-September when people tend to switch to other outdoor enjoyment, like fishing and hunting or when school and work take again priority. The early summer was cold and wet which brought down the number of hikes and participants.
Still, it was overall a good season. No mishaps or accidents were reported. Hikes covered the range from walks in our beautiful woods and parks around town, explorations on near and distant beaches, whale watching and more or less strenuous hikes and climbs through meadows and to mountain peaks.
On 23+ hikes we counted 213 participants. Of these 174 were adults, 18 (or more) were seniors over 60. 41 (or more) were children and teens. 125 (or more) were locals (many of them Coast Guard families who are new to the Island) and 40 (or more) visitors from off the island. I know of only one participating foreign visitor, a Turk, probably the lowest number in our 15+ year program.
The organizers (Cindy Trussell, Mary Lukens and Hans Tschersich) want to thank the many volunteer hike leaders who make the continuation of this popular program possible. We are thankful for the continuing support of the Kodiak Island Borough government which covers the expense for insurance. Without this help the program would not exist since we cannot charge fees.
