I hiked the old ATV trail which has been closed to motorized traffic for a few years. Unfortunately, two fat tired motorcyles and one four-wheeler had ridden to the end of the trail and back and done incredible damage. In many places they rode off the trail creating ruts up to a foot deep in places. Motards!
The hike itself was pleasant enough - about 3.5 miles into 2 Bear Cove, then cross country to hook into the coastal trail and back through the woods on the T Point trail to complete the loop. You need GPS or map/compass to do this loop.
When you reach the point on the ATV trail where a stream is to your right and the trail curves downhill and left to the cove is a good place to head into the woods. Where the two forks of the stream meet, you cross and head uphill on a well worn (and flagged) game trail - you can follow this trail for some time, but eventually it fades out and no single, clear route is evident. (and my flagging ends) This is the time to use your compass or GPS and plot a course to hit the coast SE of Azimuth point. Once you hit the coastal trail, just follow it until it intersects with the standard T Point trails, near the old cabin.
About 8.5 miles total which can vary, depending on your route through the woods.
You cannot hike from the ATV trail to T Point entirely along the coast - believe me, I've tried to force it several times and you just hit impenetrable salmonberries, etc. There is also a section of blowdown along the coast that is incredibly difficult to get through/around.
