I went Classic cross country skiing this afternoon across Buskin Lake and up the River into the canyon (all the way to where I fell in yesterday). The skiing was good. Not icy and not too soft either. I could have used skate skiis if i had wanted to, but it was marginal and may be too soft for skate skiis by now. My poles already punched deep into snow on the lake by the time I got back. Also Philip's ruts up the river have now softenned up - Good classic skiing. Felt like spring. It would be silver or purple klister conditions.

That was excellent. Super fast. We went up the canyon until the point where you have to scramble up and over that alder sticking out of the bank. Very, very fast conditions. Better poling plus a little sun and it would have been perfect.

The alder out of the bank is not yet in the canyon! It begins about 300 meters beyond when the canyon suddenly gets very deep (like 50 meters deep). At that point the trail gets much more narrow, and I think much, much more scenic. Go beyond the alder out of the bank. That point is always a sticky point - the river itself at that point never freezes - and once beyond it actually gets easier. Believe it or not there are mountain goats in the canyon. Patrick
