Long ago Mike M used to "maintain" a trail up Kash from Russian Cr. You would drive to the end of S Russian Cr Road, park near the river, then walk about 1/4 mile up the river along the bank, and then at a stand of cottonwoods you would head up the hill. It put you on a ridge that was just east of the little canyon that drains the big bowl on the northwest side of the mountain. Anyone been up this route in the past year? It was a super nice way to get into the bowl without having to go up the ATV trail and over the peak. Sorta like this:

We used it last July coming back from a Heli camping trip on Center Mountain. It's still there, but if you do not know the trail do not attempt it! It goes down the ridge to the left of the one you marked - thru the 154T. The foot tread in the trail is pretty good, but it is a little overgrown. It would probably be pretty easy to follow at this time of year. But the bad part was at the bottom. The river channel had changed and now flows where we used to hike along the edge of the river. Getting to the cottonwood grove is difficult.
Also - to go to Center I break off the trail around the 500 meter line and cut across the bowl. It saves a half hour.
I'd still use this trail to climb the center mountain ridge. But more and more the trashed nature of the ridge has had me going back up into the backcountry on the other side of the valley (other side of Russian River). It's actually about an hour more quick to get back towards Crown on that side, and it is a far more pleasant hike. And no trash and ruts! Patrick

We went and checked it out. I had hiked it many times long ago, but it has been a while. It was never an obvious trail, and this time was no different. We went up the green route and down the red route. We just hiked it. It was frozen but snow free going up to about 1,000 feet, then firm snow up to 1,500 feet where it started turning to rime ice. We didn't have crampons and couldn't get any steps kicked in effectively so we came back down.

Quishy - you know the route; we did it once together, and brought back a goat. Don't you remember all the head-high alder? Patrick

Trick - I remember, sorta, but not sure I could find it - actually the first part is what's hazy for me. I remember all the rest, though - it is a great route.
