A day at the beach, Kodiak Alaska style. It was sunny and cold in town, so we headed out to Narrow Cape to ride but found fog and low clouds when we got there. It was about 20F and clear in town and about 35F and damp out there. Oh well. We parked just north of Barry Lagoon, at the first good beach access down Burton's "driveway". We went through the electric fence gate, hooked a quick left across the creek, then right towards the coast and wound our way to the beach through the driftwood. We arrived a bit after high tide, but it had not fallen much yet and the sand high on the beach was very soft and riding was slow/strenuous. You can see the sun shining inland: The beach is mostly backed by low bluffs and meadows, but rocky outcrops make it narrower in places. At the first outcrop you can proceed on the sand along the shore at a middle stage of the tide. Closer to the Sacramento River, there are subsequent cliffy sections that can only be negotiated at low or minus tide if you want to stay on the beach. We got there at the 4 foot point in the tide and while we could have gone over the hill above the cliffs, we just turned around there instead. I think I remember staying on the beach all the way around the cliff in the background on a minus tide long ago: There are a lot of these guys snacking on bull kelp on the beach:

Stacy and I have had some great backpacking trips to Sacramento from Burton's during periods of extreme low tide.

We hit it again yesterday for the first day of spring. Very nice indeed. Here's a short video from our outing:
