As part of my never-ending quest for a deer, I hiked in the old ATV trail to the lake, then up to the top of Monashka Mountain and a little beyond. The ATV trail has not been used by any motor vehicles since the blizzard: blowdowns and snapoffs have blocked the trail just beyond the parking lot and, thankfully, no one has cleared the trail. The trail was quite wet due to the recent deluge. Some areas of the trail are starting to recover, but the ATV damage is so severe that most of the trail remains scarred. The trail from the lake up the mountain is well-defined and there are two or three well-placed pink flags to help first-timers in tricky spots. I arrived on top and it was beautiful; five minutes later, fog rolled in and stayed for a couple hours. No deer - I did notice bear tracks in the mud on the ATV trail. Also, a new family of beavers has moved into the lake and are constructing a new lodge and have reinforced and expanded the dams.
