I just got back from a classic cross country ski at Swampy Acres and it was all powder. It seemed it never rained there this morning. Near the road there was a thin 'zipper crust' with powder both below and above it that must have formed this morning when the temperatures briefly went above freezing, but further back in it was all powder. Around 7 inches of new snow when I went at 1 PM but it snowed almost an inch in the 45 minutes it took to ski the loop. pretty deep snow everywhere now. I was impressed to notice old snowshoe tracks NEXT to the old ski track ruts. Now that's one polite snowshoer!
Swampy acres is a good place to classic ski when it is windy everywhere else because the trees offer protection from the wind. Also the lakes around town (like gertrude) probably got a layer of water under the snow right now (both from the warmth in town - it was raining at my house this morning - and the weight of the snow on the ice pushing it down). So better to wait a day before skiing the lakes in town.
