Today Doug D and I stashed some bikes at the Red Cloud trailhead, drove to the end of Anton Larsen Bay Rd, and hiked up the north Sheratin trail. We broke into the alpine and headed west to the saddle above Shelly Lake, dropped down to the lake and skirted it on the Sheratin Bay (west) side, then climbed towards the peak of Sheratin. Before getting all the way up we followed a series of small bowls and shelves that link up between the many cliff bands on the Elbow Creek side of the Sheratin below the peak. It's kind of complicated terrain and there is really only one good way through at one point, so really not recommended for the uninitiated. But it is a lot more interesting than going over the summit which is really just a gravel patch. We descended via the Blue Room and the Red Cloud Trail, picked up the bikes, and rode to the end of the road where we had parked. The day was typical Kodiak NW weather for the time of year: cold, clear, brilliant. Doug took snowshoes and they almost would have helped in a few sections of postholing, but Microspikes were definitely in order and we used them to great effect. Nearly out of the spruce and into the alpine: Down and around Shelly Lake: 'Positive' bear tracks in the eroded snow: The shuttle: A great day. :^)
