The American River was simply superb today. T-shirt weather, a nice firm and fast surface, minimal motard traffic, and stunning scenery. Things had frozen up overnight and you could ski pretty much anywhere you wanted, though the kick grip was not that great at first. Poling was super and there was nothing punchy about it. We followed Gregg and Lisa's tracks in the snow machine tread for a while and then hugged the banks and made a new track. We went up the canyon as far as we got with the snow bikes a while back. The snow bridges over the water are fun. On the way out things were warming up so we extended the ski track (outside the snow machine tread) all the way down to where you get back on the road. If it freezes up again, the skate skiing would be excellent, I think, though you still have to deal with the road the first couple of miles, and there has been some 4-wheeler traffic now. On the way in, using the snowmachine track: Ever get that feeling that someone is following you?? Plenty of snow in the canyon:

Amen! Thanks to Gregg, Lisa, Philip, and Adelia for an excellent track. It was a great ski and I managed to get sunburned! For those who are marking their scorecards, the distance from the Chiniak Highway to the farthest skiable point up the canyone is 7.5 miles.

Cool. We saw that same Ouzel flitting from one open water patch to the next.
