We went to Salonie around 2pm, and it looks like someone had been there ahead of us. There are no vehicle tracks on the road and things looked good, but we immediately noticed that if you were not careful and put much weight down on one ski, you would randomly break through the crust. This made skiing a balancy and tiring endeavor as you had to concentrate constantly and only make careful and judicious movements. It was too punchy to pole hard too. We skied about a half mile past the rifle range into the forest but then turned around since it wasn't much fun.
On the way out it was already noticeably warmer and we were breaking through all over the place. The way out was pretty unpleasant and slow. It was warm and sunny with hardly a breath of wind, but the snow was not cooperating. It seems that whomever was there earlier had experienced better conditions and was not breaking through like we were.
