Today I tried skate skiing on Lake Genevieve (sometimes called lake Catherine too) and then popped off and skiied the nearby trails. I went half way up the Pilar Mountain trail above the old power station too. The skate skiing was not great - I often found myself breaking thru - it was actually best on the lake itself and on the open fields near the power station. It was very breakable in the woods.
I was surprised how few people have been skiing and snowshoeing back there - it looks like no one has done the loop and just a few people on the main trail beside the lake. I think it would be great classic skiing today. And it is not a hiked out, pitted, icy mess. Just a little too breakable for good skate skiing, but a thumbs up for classic. I think the best skate skiing right now is out on Buskin Lake.

Patrick - I did the loop the afternoon the big snow started, starting and ending at Nemetz Gazebo. Apparently my trail is completely covered. I'll probably head there tomorrow for a classic ski.

Right now it is slushing at my house - but on a day like today it is best to remember that what it is doing in town - it probably is NOT doing out at Swampy acres or further inland at the golf course. It will probably stay all snow all day at the golf course while it rains in town. So later on today do not get discouraged by the rain in town - go skiing! I plan on classic skiing in swampy acres - I think crossing Buskin Lake might be a tad hellish today. Patrick

Hey Patrick - How about breaking a classic trail on the loop that goes from Nemetz to the Beaver Pond and back up and around to connect with the road to the substation.? You're young and strong and full of vim and vigor....

Anybody been out along Burma road? The start from Anton Larsen Bay Road looks untracked, but then you sometimes get walkers joining from the end of the airport runway and messing up the section farther up between Barometer and Old Womans.
