Today Adelia and I drove out to Pasagshak Pass and hiked up into the Marin Range. It had been some time since I was out there last, but it is worth a trip if you have good weather and a little time. We did a lollipop loop starting from the paved parking spot just past milepost 4 on the road to Pasagshak (about 1/2 a mile before the top of the pass to Pasagshak). If you walk up the road from the parking area about 100' a nice trail starts at the base of a telephone pole (#P65 if you can read the silver number plates about 10' up the pole). Once up on the ridge you are in alpine and can walk around all you like. We hiked to the east up the first big peak (1,500'), then swung north into the saddle linking you to the next peak, and climbed that and the tallest peak in that area (1,970'). There is not much snow right now, but the ground is frozen in places and there are some steep bits so bring some light crampons or traction devices.
This map is looking north (you can see Kalsin Bay in the background):
Out the ridge:
Looking down the headwaters of the Sacramento River to the outer coast north of the Burton Ranch.
We ran into some fluffy goats back there:
Headed up the final peak where we turned around:
Nearly on top. You can see Pasagshak in the background:
More goats on the next mountain:
Looking down the valley to the mouth of the Sacramento River. A very cool (and long) hike is to start at Pasagshak Pass where we parked and hike down the entire length of the Sacramento River to the coast, and then walk down the beach to the Burton Ranch. This requires a shuttle, but is a fantastic trip.
