An avalanche of Pillar Mtn closed the town/base road temporarily. The new snow is not adhering to the icy layer that John mentioned in his Pyramid post. Since the snow was fairly wet with air temps around 34, then dropping ten degrees, slabs are forming. Coupled with the wind-loading that is continuing today, avalanche conditions are probably pretty hazardous right now. A good rule of thumb is to wait at least 24 hours after a storm before venturing into the backcountry; since it's still windy, I'd say the "storm" is still going on. This is a great time for some x-c skiing in the lower elevations and to re-read your well-thumbed copy of "Snow Sense".
