The wind was screaming across the lake, but once you hit the river, you're out of it. I headed straight for the mouth and up the river and I was able to ski all the way to the waterfall (without falling in, Patrick). I set a nice track parallel to the skate skier trail. It was tempting to skinny-dip in the open pool at the base of the waterfall, but I passed this time The snow was great, but there were a few bare patches of ice on the lake due to the wind. Coming back in my track with the wind at my back was the bee's knees. ;D

Gregg and I went up the river this morning. He went classic while I went on skate skis. No wind, even on the lake. We saw your tracks and I must say, I am surprised you did not fall in! You went across some mighty thin ice.
I did not go skiing yesterday - car in the shop - and was amazed by how much wind pack there was on the lake today. It must have been WINDY yesterday.

A friend and I went across the Buskin and up the canyon farther than we have ever been before, but we still didn't make it to the waterfall! How far is it? We kept thinking it was just around the corner, but finally decided we needed to turn back when the canyon narrowed and the stream was visibly flowing. The tracks continued, but we didn't! Thanks for those great tracks. What a gorgeous day.

It's actually a long way up the canyon to the waterfall. And falling in really is no big deal up there. You just get wet up to your knees. Anyhow, I made a video that I posted on youtube of Gregg skiing up there today. Patrick
here is the link (I think you have to copy and paste it into your web browser because I do not know how to do hot links).

The wind was SCREAMIN' on the lake yesterday!! As to the thin ice, I think it was thicker than you think. I cautiously tested in places where I feared falling in before skiing on them. ms

Dayum. That looks awfully nice. Nuthing but crusty snow in Maine right now. We saw a placard dedicated to one of your relatives, Patrick. A certain Dudley Saltonstall. A pretty interesting role he played in a certain Revolutionary war naval battle here near Isle au Haut, it seems.

And more snow today - Gregg and I went again and found 2 to 3 inches of new powder on the old tracks. But so light it was still easy skate skiing. Tips of skiis totally under the snow a lot of the time. And more snow in the forecast. Whoooooo hoooooo! No wind at all - even on the lake crossing. Patrick
And Philip - I think Dudley is famous for the quote - 'don't shoot they might shoot back' - smart guy, actually.
