This afternoon I skate skiied across the lake and up the river into the canyon. Fast conditions with just a little bit of powder on top of a hard crust. The wind was not bad - even on the lake. Some fairly deep drifts along the lee shore. Patrick

Cool! I've moved up in the world.
Also, I just got back from skate skiing the same loop I did yesterday on the upper buskin. 3-4 inches of light fluffy powder on a hard crust. It was so light I could still skate ski easily, but unless you're an advanced skate skiier I'd go classic. You need good technique (weight transfer, timing and glide) to skate in deep snow. Otherwise you wallow.
I loved it today because I was totally silent just gliding along with the tips of my skiis under the snow. Only noise was the crunch of my pole plant hitting the crust below the powder.
