I went up the Buskin on my skate skiis this afternoon, and it was pretty darn fast! The lake is now mostly glare ice but there is a band of good crusty snow along the edge that makes for good skate skiing. the wind was not too bad either. I skiied almost up to the waterfall - we really have not lost all that much snow. I skiied up the river from the lake and then back through the fields before getting back on the river. In places there was a skim of powder - especially up in the canyon. But mostly the snow was a coarse, hard crust (not boilerplate though). Good stuff. The ultimate crust cruising!
i even ran into Mr Squishy! I now know who it is - hopefully they'll post a bit on what they thought. Note I did not give gender away.

Also - it looked like a wind blown hell up on Pyramid. Wind blown tails of powder off of the summit. I would not go downhill skiing today! Patrick

Hey Patrick: Squishy here. I'm an advanced beginner at skate skiing and I found the conditions on the lake pretty good and excellent on the river. Patrick gave me a little coaching, then literally skied circles around me. Classic skiing would be pretty tough on the Buskin right now - hard crusty snow and Joe the Post-holer has shown up and decimated the track in places. You'd think Joe would be tired of sinking up to a foot with every step and figure out the snowshoe/ski thang. I think I'll head for Salonie tomorrow before I go to the Brian Levy wake.

One should never "give gender away" - make them pay for it!
