Today i would have rather gone skate skiing on Buskin lake, but this morning the kids were so difficult to get into the car that I never had a chance to also put skate ski gear into the car. Good thing that yesterday afternoon after picking the kiddos up i also never had a chance to take the downhill gear out of the car. So after work my only option was downhill skiing and off to Pyramid I went.
I wish I had been able to go skate skiing!
Pyramid was not great. Partly breakable and bumpy, icy near the bottom and a soft crust with wind packed powder on it up high. Weirdly enough it was not windy. The wind was whipping the flags down valley at the Com STA station at the outlet to Buskin Lake, and i could see blowing snow off the summit of Sheratin and other nearby peaks. But Pryamid was weirdly calm.
Still the skiing was not great. I expected spring corn in the South Bowl and got wind packed powder on crust. Lower down on the three tree run there was no powder but you could still get a good edge into the soft crust. The bottom 200 feet was bad because the crust got a little soft and inconsistent - breakable crust oh no! So mediocre downhill skiing at best. But I do believe there might be blown in powder in the North Bowl. The North Bowl might actually have good skiing.
Nonetheless, tomorrow I'll be skate skiing up the upper Buskin! Patrick

The Coastal Trail is still excellent.
Just FYI.
