Today Zoya, me and Meghan went to Fort Abercrombie to go cross country skiing. I figured Buskin Lake might be a tad windy, and by this time Swampy Acres has probably been snowshoed and hiked into lumpy ice.
Meghan and Zoya went classic and I skate skied. Very nice conditions - no wind pack at all on the lake and it was not very windy. Got darn right warm in the lee of the spruce trees in the sun. I highly recommend it. I also beat in a pretty good skate ski track around the perimeter. Patrick

Good to know. We will probably hit that in an hour or so. Thanks for the report.

It's only a 1.75 K loop or so - but the trees make it nice. I did 20 loops and I must admit I felt a bit like a gerbil near the end there. Patrick

We just got home (6pm). It was quite nice with only a few wind gusts crossing the lake. We were plenty warm after the first lap, and we classic skied for an hour. The trails in the forest walking down to the lake are ICY. Wear your Icebugs or cleats. The snow covering the lake does not seem to be sticking to the ice that well, so I wonder if skate skiing would be that great since pushing off with your skis may be a bit inconsistent. The poling works well, however. Overall a nice afternoon in the park. Some ice fisherman left his auger near the bridge at the back end of the lake. We just left it there figuring the owner would be back.

I thought the grip for skate skiing was fine - you're supposed to glide on a flat ski, and not really 'push off' per se anyway. But the snow I pressed into the ice while breaking in a trail will freeze to the ice anyway - so by tomorrow you could probably push straight out sideways if you wanted.
As regards the ice auger - it is broken and I suspect that is why the ice fishermen left it on the ice. I've had to pick up cans, beer bottles, and various wrappers from around those ice fishing holes a few times now. Someone is a slob ice fisherman. But I too left it in hopes they might want to try and fix it or something. Patrick
