We were a group of 4 today and summited South Sister byway of the Bench Trail. 30 minute skin along the bench trail before we broke off and booted up the summer trail. Approximately 2miles of travel to summit. At the to, the weather cooled off. Most slopes were breakable crust with varying thickness of the rain crust. The snow didn’t soften up today. The weather cycle this past week seemed to drop more rain than snow on the sisters than I anticipated. I’m curious if it was too cold today (temps about 25deg) for the snow to really soften or the East and West aspects of the mountain don’t receive enough direct sunlight. At the top, all aspects were firm and crusty. Decided to try a line from the main chute at the summit. The was a 2.5” rain and made turns difficult. We bailed out of that run after ~50ft. Skied down the boot path until we found a lower angle run that had a little more sun. Not great skiing but today was gorgeous. We had fun trying out a different line. -Gibbs Looking up from the bench trail: On the summit looking east: Looking south:
