Over the Labor Day weekend I took advantage of the lovely (fantastic!) weather to do a route I have been considering for a while. Namely, to explore the ridge south of Crown Mountain that leads down to Hidden Basin. I have looked at the slope above Hidden Basin a few times and wondered how hard it would be to get to Crown from there. Well, I found out! Difficult, but not impossible. I started in Bells Flats, climbed the Cope 4 wheeler trail, and then ridge walked/climbed to Crown Mountain. I swung around the southeast flank of Crown and made my way out the ridge and camped above Hidden Basin. The next day I dropped down to Ugak Bay and hiked along the coast to Saltery Cove. I took the ridge just west and parallel to the Saltery Cove Road to climb back into the Alpine and camped a second night. I hiked home via Center Mountain on the 3rd day. It's a long and taxing trip (60 miles) and it would probably make sense to do it a little slower. Next time. :^) See it here: Kodiak to Ugak and Back
