I am curious if anyone has hiked up to this lake before? I don't know the name of it, but from what I can tell it looks similar to Shelly Lake, (filled with volcanic ash). I am thinking the route that makes the most sense would be, taking the road through Burton Ranch's property and then hiking in between the mountains to it, but I am curious as to wether or not there is an existing trail.

Many (many!) years ago I was visiting a friend who was working at the Burton Ranch and we rode horses up to that lake (I think it was that one, anyway). There must have been a trail at the time because we were able to take the horses the whole way, but who knows if it may be overgrown now. Hopefully someone who knows the back 40 of the Burton Ranch will know.

Stacy and I tried to hike to that lake a couple years ago; Bill Burton gave us a key to get through the elk gates, but we were unable to find any semblance of a trail. The prospect of nonstop bushwhacking deterred us from giving it a go. I've looked at it many times from Burton's ranch; there might be a way to get at from the other side. BTW, we refer to it as "Shaft Lake".
