I watched the sunshine warming the sky this morning with anticipation. Threw the boat on the car and slid into the water at Mission Beach. The weather was perfect and the wildlife were everywhere. At least 30 otters lolling on their backs, a plethora of waterfowl, one bald eagle, neatly striped jellyfish I've not seen before, and a dock-full of grunting, stinking sea lions. Only one other vessel, a small fishing boat, was making use of the waterways, aside from my paddle-driven variety. Most recently, I lived in Ketchikan, a paddler's paradise by most standards, but I've already forgotten that fair isle for the wiles that Kodiak is throwing around. The color and clarity of the water here is stunning, and the stark ruggedness of the islands against the burnt umber of Pillar Mtn's fireweed is gorgeous. The route was about 8 miles and completed in around 2.5 hours. Calm seas, with occasional large, maybe 5-10ft swells breaking out past Bird Island. Tomorrow I hope to stretch my legs on the Monashka Mtn/Reservoir Ridge trail, assuming I can find it - loving this clear weather!
