5/4/12 I just barely beat the rain and snow. I started skate skiing at the parking lot around 1:30 and did the 'Chalet loop'. It was pretty darn good. Solid crust with about an inch of thawed corn on top. Perhaps a little slow - but I liked it on the downhills. Still plenty of snow at the road. I think the classic would be good too.

Some photos - I did not bring my sunglasses and for a bit there the sun popped out and most blinded me. Also it was the 3rd of May and not the 4rth. Patrick

5/11//12 Not very good skate skiing today. TOO soft. I did the chalet loop and should have turned around and gone downhill when it was soft at the road. But I thought it would firm up with elevation - it didn't. Plenty of coverage just too soft. I kept on breaking through etc. Patrick

5/15/12 I started up in my downhill gear around 1:30 and it was a little icy on the west and north facing slopes - so I went back to my car and got out the skate skiing gear. I put my mini climbing skins on the skiis and climbed classic from the snowmachine parking area to the spruce tree covered plateau above the red cloud. Then i took the skins off and went skate skiing. VERY good. Firm crust and you just sank in an inch or so. I also only had to take my skiis off once to cross the creek near the road. So I got to go classic, skate and downhill skiing all in one day! Patrick

This is the ski I put onto the bottom of my skate skis. In the photo I have just removed the hocky tape I put on the front and back of the skin to keep it from peeling back off the ski. Today I had great glide and kick with the mini skin. Here are my classic tracks from going up the hill - it is really a quite pleasant gradual climb. I might take Zoya here in the next few days. This is where I changed over and took the skins off of the skis - you can see my classic tracks in the distance and my skate ski tracks in the foreground. Cowabunga! It was awesome, but will ONLY be good if it gets down to around 35 overnight at the airport. It needs to freeze overnight. And is probably only good until 2:30 in the afternoon or so before it gets too soft.

5/16 Today it was even better than yesterday and I went classic up to the big bowl towards Sheratin and then skate skiied back. It was very firm when I started at 1:30 but by 2:30 it was almost too soft. So for today 2PM was sort of the cut off. Patrick

Some Photos from today: Below is my usual destination - the 'big bowl'. This is the valley that leads to the road - you can see Pyramid on the right. Another view of Pyramid and my classic up track.
