12/23 After yesterday's wind I decided to try some skiing lower down, and wished I had done so earlier. The skate skiing at the pass was excellent today. I skate skiied to the west of the pass and have a little 2K loop. The base is very deep and there is about 1-2 inches of fast, refrozen soft stuff on top. Absolutely perfect crust cruising. Too bad it will probably get demolished tomorrow. Patrick

12/26 The Golf course lost A LOT of snow since yesterday. It was looking pretty dismal today around 1 PM so I headed up to the pass to go cross country skiing. The road is much better than yesterday and very doable with studs or 4 wheel drive. the worst of the ice is just after the golf course!
At the pass there was an inch or so of new snow and it was snowing. I parked near the second lot and went cross country skiing on my skate ski loop. Lisa M joined me and she liked it too. But if it freezes it might be a bit rutty and icy tomorrow. I'm hoping for more crust cruising on skate skis! So freeze Hard!
And it looked windy up on the mountain. I think the snow is blowing off ice up high.

12/27 If you are an advanced skier the skate skiing was excellent today at the Pass. At the parking lot it was a little icy but carvable. I went up to the plateau above and to the south of the ski chalet - maybe 300 feet higher? There was 1-2 inches of dry powder on a carvable crust. REALLY EXCELLENT. I bombed all around on the plateau and it was a little like skiing the Lekish Loop at Kincaid Park - only I had much better views. Patrick

12/27 Quick and dirty 2 minute video that shows the skate skiing conditions. Pretty good powder!

12/29 Yesterday it was pretty windy, icy and cold and a lot of the powder blew away. But today i still took the dogs and tried again near sunset. No wind and there was still powder in places. Also it was warm enough that I did not need a jacket and the crust seemed soft. It was actually pretty gorgeous. Hopefully Philip will post a picture i took and am about to email him. Maybe jazz him up to get back to Kodiak! Patrick

2/4 The conditions are excellent for crust cruising right now. Not so good at the parking lot elevation - but above 700 feet or so elevation it is powder on a soft crust. I made a short video that shows my little skate ski area on the plateau above the ski chalet. pretty much between the ski chalet and Buskin lake.

2/10 Today the windblown cold snow was very slow - sort of skiing in sand. But the places where there was still refrozen powder on the crust that had not been blown away - it was still fast. I was actually surprised that it was not all that windy around 2 PM.
